A flying visit

I gotta say I’m a little excited!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hubs and I are taking another quick trip back to Brisbane this weekend for my Grandpa’s 90th birthday. Even though we’ll be completely exhausted when we get home on Sunday, especially now that there’s a time difference, it’s totally worth it. We arrive in the Vegas Friday night at 11pm, then it’ll be all hands on deck on Saturday setting up for the lunch time party, then it’s party time! Then we’re heading out to catch up with a few friends Saturday night, then it’s Mum’s birthday on Sunday (Happy Birthday Mum!!!) which we will be celebrating over brekky, then it’s a catch up with my Mum-in-law, then off to the airport for a 2:30pm flight.

Phew. I’m exhausted. BUT EXCITED!!!! I love coming home for wee visits. It’s so nice to be around familiar faces and streets and weather. And my Nanny always gets particularly excited to see us, exclaiming “where is she” as soon as our car drives in. I always feel like a bit of a celebrity on these types of visits. Even though it’s not ALL about us, everyone wants to see us and it makes me feel super-spesh.

I’ve just done a proof-read of this post, and realise that I’ve referred to both Brisbane and Melbourne as “home”. I guess it’s nice to know that Brisbane will always be my home town, but that I feel happy and comfortable enough to call Melbourne home for the time being.

It’s going to be GREAT!!

10 things….

I MISS about Brisbane

1. My friends and family (you know who you are 🙂
2. Working at YACMU
3. The convenience of having a car
4. The predictable weather
5. Being able to see people whenever I want
6. Mt Coot-tha lookout
7. The warm water at the beaches
8. My Nanny
9. TEA Party & Toowong UC
10. Having a friend or 2 who can just drop around when I need them 🙂

A Toast

When it comes to public speaking, I’m the type of person to either a) be completely prepared and read off a piece of paper or b) be entirely unprepared and joke my way through it. I’ve never really been great at public speaking, and unless I’m reading off a piece of paper, or joking around, I don’t have the confidence to stand up in front of a group and deliver something to remember. I also generally just get through it and then not really remember much about it afterwards. But last Saturday night, that all changed.

Hubs and I have been audience to quite a number of speakers since living on college, and in our opinion (well, his more strongly than mine) the best speakers are those who a) don’t read their notes, b) don’t memorise their speech and then just say it from beginning to end, and c) come across naturally and genuinely, only needing notes to prompt them.

Over the weekend, Hubs and I went up to the Vegas for my cousin’s 21st birthday and after being there for a couple of hours, I decided that I would like to make a speech. I frantically scribbled a whole lot of notes and started putting something together. Then I stopped. I thought to myself “I can do this on my own. I don’t need to write this out word for word. I can do this!” So I wrote down 4 things that I wanted to mention, and left the rest up to fate. I gotta say, I don’t think I’ve EVER been so nervous in my life. Those 3 glasses of Lambrusco (yes, I drink Lambrusco) that I had just drunk vanished from my bloodstream from the adrenaline pumping around my body. My mouth went dry, my palms got sweaty, my legs felt like they were going to buckle and I started questioning my decision to fly solo.

All of a sudden, the floor was open to anyone who wanted to make a speech. I stood up (rather shakily) and as nervous as I was, delivered a pretty damn good speech. (Well I thought so anyway!) I was in the moment. I was actually listening to myself, instead of just reading something word-for-word. It was one of the most exhilarating experiences I’ve had with public speaking.

So thank you Hubsband, for giving me the courage and encouragement I needed to give something new and exciting a go. I’m actually looking forward to the next time!

All you can eat… and then some

I thought I would share with you all the experience of visiting my Nanny and Grandpa. Since we moved to Melbourne, Nanny and Grandpa have been missing us terribly, and they’re looking forward to our visit in a couple of weeks. I’m sure Nanny has already started planning the menu, which could include any, (or all!) of the following:

Entre
Sledgie (pickled herring) usually served with steamed potato
Borscht (beetroot soup)
Other soup – chicken noodle, barley etc
Pickled cucumbers (what’s with all the pickling??!! Maybe that’s why they’re enjoying such a long life! – Grandpa is turning 90 this year and Nanny is 85.)

Here’s a photo of them:

Now back to the food…
Main course
Pierogi
Roast turkey
Chicken – either smoked or roasted (1 WHOLE chicken, that is!)
Sausages
Crumbed steak or pork
Crumbed Barramundi
Shepherd’s Pie
Polish Sausage
Potato – either fried (yummy!) or mashed and sometimes steamed AS WELL
Carrots, beans, peas, potato salad, seafood salad, cauliflower, pumpkin
Broccolyyyyyyy (thanks for agreeing with me Jenny!!)
Cucumber and sour cream, Coleslaw, Cabbage, Beetroot salad
A mixed platter of ham, boiled eggs, lettuce, tomatoes and cheese

At Christmas she’ll add Fresh prawns!

And then there’s…
Dessert!
Round 1:
Jelly
Ice Cream
Fruit Salad (I get a special one without mango 🙂
German Custard
Trifle

Round 2:
Napolean Cake (it looks a bit different when Nanny makes it) or
Walnut cake or
Cheesecake or
Apple Pie or
Fruit cake or
Plum pudding
and that’s not to say she won’t sometimes make 2 of these cakes for us!!

Round 3:
Tea & Coffee & Aldi biscuits

By this stage, most normal people will be groaning and loosening the belt. Or for those who know what Nanny’s is like, they’ve had the foresight to wear their stretchy pants! What you also may not know, is that Nanny cooks the same for 4 people as she does for 6 or 8, though when she knows another person is expected, she’ll cook more.

Here’s a photo from Christmas:

All jokes aside, I love my Nanny and Grandpa dearly and they are two of the most generous people I know. I just wish I could cook as good as Nanny!!

I miss Southbank Cinemas

A Whine

One of our favourite things to do in Brisvegas was to go to the movies at Southbank. Among other things, it has the cheapest tickets in town. Their normal prices are $7.90 for adults and $5.90 for students. Which meant Hubs and I could go to the movies for a mere $13.80. AND the parking was FREE!! And if we decided to get some munchies, they were cheap as chips as well. I really can’t fathom why anyone would pay $14 per ticket to see a movie at the other places.

The other amazing things about Southbank is that they have all the latest movies, and you can see all the new releases on the IMAX screen. And don’t even get me started on cheap Tuesday – then the tickets drop down in price even more.

*sigh* In Melbournia, it would cost me $15.50 and Hubs $12.50 to see a movie. There are a few movies we really want to see, but at that price, plus train tickets, we might as well just get a couple of bottles of wine, hire a DVD and have a great night in! This doesn’t solve our problem of wanting to see movies like Hancock, Get Smart and The Dark Knight, without having to promise our first born to Village Cinemas.

We are on the look out for cheap cinemas down here, so if you know of any, please let us know! Otherwise we’ll just save our pocket money and we might get to see 1 movie every 6 months. *sigh* My life is so hard 🙂
