10 things on the 10th

Holiday edition

We are just over a week into our holiday with less than five days to go until we head back home. It has been an absolute cracker. The kids have been having a great time, there has been plenty of beach action, games of Settlers of Catan and Cards Against Humanity, wine, cheese, beer and chocolate, and yummy food being devoured.

Here’s the week in review:

1. My little chef helpers making ginger bread men20161004_151157

2. This cards against humanity combo had us all in stitches. It was a tough choice between the two.

3. A sleep-in AND brekky in bed. It’s just what Hubs does 🙂

4. So much beach time! 20161006_170348

5. More help in the kitchen! This time it was chocolate cupcakes.

6. Lots of snuggly cuddles on the couch. 20161009_160547

7-10. For some reason I am unable to upload any photos over 2GB and there are some crackers so I’ll just share them on my fb link. It’s just been such a great week and I would seriously consider making this a biennial event. If everyone else is keen that is 😉

10 things on the 10th

Seriously, I feel like I just compiled my last “10 things on the 10th” and my reminder popped up on my phone on Monday for the next one! What the?… I actually already had this one written as it came to me not long after I wrote the last one. I’m sure a few of you will know who this gem of a friend of mine is 🙂

10 things a good friend of mine has taught me in the 18 years I have known her:
(These aren’t things she specifically went out of her way to teach me, just things I observed and have really appreciated at the time, and beyond.)

1. Don’t smoke just to be cool – I went through a smoking-while-drinking phase at uni and it gave me the worst smokers cough, not to mention what it was doing to my asthma. But I wanted to try it and I wanted to fit in. She helped me see the light.

2. School is fun – I remember her telling me that her son happily went to school everyday and she asked me if I knew why. My first thought was “because he would get into trouble if he didn’t?” The answer was much more simple: her son was excited about going to school every day because she would tell him, and he would agree, that school is fun. I have always remembered that when talking to the kids about school, and it really does catch on.

3. Tying shoes – another parenting one. Her son, who would have been maybe 5 at the time, came and asked for help tying his shoes and she made a huge deal about praising him for asking for help. Apparently he had been going through a stage of getting upset if he couldn’t do something, instead of asking, so this was real progress. Again, such a small thing, but it really stuck with me.

4. First eyebrow shape – she plucked my eyebrows for the first time and I’ve never gone back. I remember she was so excited to have a “blank canvas” I think were her words.

5. To love my body and how it works and moves – oh boy we went through so many weight gains and losses together in those first 10 years. We ate a lot of chocolate and drank a lot of beer and wine together, and were always looking to drop a few kgs. And although she has been much more successful than me in maintaining a healthy lifestyle in the last 8 years, she really inspires me and encourages to be my best self. Not in a “you’ll feel better if you drop some weight” kind of way, but in a “be confident and comfortable in your own skin. The number isn’t who you are” kind of way.

6. Sex and the City – she totally introduced me to this show, and we used to have a Monday night ritual where I would come over (with chocolate) (and sometimes wine) and watch The Secret Life of Us, followed by Sex and the City, and if I was really rebellious, I’d stay for Six Feet Under. Best Monday night trifecta baby.

7. How to flirt – I remember going out with her one night and told her drunkenly that I wish I could flirt better, because I had absolutely no air of mystery about me (still don’t…) so the following weekend I went over to her house to get ready and we went out for a night of practice. And I got pretty good at it I must say! So much fun 🙂

8. To add a bit of moisturiser when applying my foundation – I watched her do this one time at her place and have done it ever since.

9. Lip gloss can do wonders – she rocks a lip gloss like no one else I know.

10. Yoga and wine go well together – enough said.

SO much love for you babe  xxx

10 things I love about our house

20160710_115502

1. The white picket fence. It’s so cliche and I love it.

2. It’s really drafty. Which granted, in winter isn’t such a great thing, but for those hot summers, it’s nice to feel the breeze come up through the gaps in the floor boards.

3. All the random nails and hooks and shelves around the place. Exhibit A.

20160710_115042

4. The random beam under the stairs that is about a meter off the ground and the perfect height for pull-ups.

5. There are 3 toilet roll holders in the bathroom. Do you know how often I don’t have to change the toilet roll? Genius.

20160710_114632

6. The bay window. I have grand plans to give this baby a facelift. Some time…

20160710_114901

7. The gap in the floorboards at the back door where I sweep out all the sand and dirt from the pile of shoes right as you come in.

20160710_114646

8. My kitchen. Yes, it’s small and has limited bench space and no full-size oven and it’s dark and old and pokey and there’s very little storage for anything, but it hasn’t stopped me from cooking up a storm for dinner parties or just for my little family. It drives me crazy but I love it because it’s mine.

20160710_115100

9. The china cabinet which forms the centre of 4 different rooms. This is such a gorgeous feature of the house! In the “toy” room it’s full of china and glass, in the Lego room it houses board games etc, from the media room it’s a built in robe which has our winter coats and spare winter doonas, and from the hallway there are doors to the top section which is huge and houses our suitcases etc. It makes up about half of the amount of storage in the whole house. And it’s so pretty too.

10. The view. I know I’ve posted variations of this photo a number of times before, but I just can’t get enough of it. I really feel like I’m part of the world when I sit and have my coffee and look out this way. And when you’re a stay at home mum, often with limited human interaction outside of your kids, this is a big deal. Keeps me sane! Mostly…

10 things on the 10th

10 movies I’ve seen in the last 12 (ish) months that I’d like to tell you about.
(Links to IMDB sites and italics is the IMDB blurb.)

1. Boyhood“The life of Mason, from early childhood to his arrival at college.”
If you haven’t heard of this movie, it is filmed over 12 years and uses all the same cast members, filming them in “real time” at different points in the character’s lives. It’s amazing. I love a good “coming of age” movie and this probably tops my list because the characters are literally growing up before your eyes. It was in no way fast-paced, and it didn’t follow the typical flow of a movie in that there was no real build up, climax and resolution, but it kept me interested the whole time, and it was just a real, honest movie. 5 stars.

2. Mud“Two young boys encounter a fugitive and form a pact to help him evade the vigilantes that are on his trail and to reunite him with his true love.”
I can’t really tell you why I liked this movie so much, and that blurb makes it sound like a bit of a soppy movie which it is not. I really like the subtlety of it. So often these days, movies are very over the top and go from one extreme emotion to the next and it’s exhausting. This was an unusual story that reminded me a bit of Stand By Me actually. 4 stars.

3. Interstellar“A team of explorers travel through a wormhole in space in an attempt to ensure humanity’s survival.”
Wow. Talk about an epic movie to feed the old existentialism. This movie was full-on and I found myself thinking about it for quite some time afterwards. I think I would like to watch it again to really nut it out in my head. 4 stars.

4. Birdman“Illustrated upon the progress of his latest Broadway play, a former popular actor’s struggle to cope with his current life as a wasted actor is shown.”
Another incredible movie. The soundtrack is definitely worth mentioning – it’s pretty much all percussion and just sets the pace of the movie beautifully. Again, a bit existential (see a pattern forming here??) and very quirky, and it just worked. 4.5 stars.

5. Star Wars: The Force Awakens“Three decades after the defeat of the Galactic Empire, a new threat arises. The First Order attempts to rule the galaxy and only a ragtag group of heroes can stop them, along with the help of the Resistance.”
I love it when there’s a whole lot of hype around a movie, and I know nothing much about it (specifically, not generally) and I see it and love it. One word to describe this movie: FUN. It was light, had some lovely cheesey moments, a few surprises, and a strong lady hero. All good things. 4 stars.

6. Guardians of the Galaxy“A group of intergalactic criminals are forced to work together to stop a fanatical warrior from taking control of the universe.”
Speaking of FUN. Hubs and I re-watched this recently and it was even better the second time around. Looking forward to #2?? 4 stars.

7. Mad Max: Fury Road“A woman rebels against a tyrannical ruler in postapocalyptic Australia in search for her home-land with the help of a group of female prisoners, a psychotic worshipper, and a drifter named Max.”
I was not excited about seeing this movie, but I did my wifely duty and kept an open mind and watched it with Hubs about 6 months ago. I didn’t really love it or hate it, but I found some of the visual effects a little hard to watch (I’m a complete wuss) so when Hubs wanted to re-watch it in HD a few weeks ago, I was less than enthused. Until one night, he really needed pepping up, so I suggested it. He gave me a wry smile and jumped on the couch like a little kid. And I gotta say, I actually really enjoyed it the second time around. I think I took more notice of the story this time, and was less affected by the visuals. So yeah, I surprised even myself. 4 stars.

8. Soylent Green“With the world ravaged by the greenhouse effect and overpopulation, an NYPD detective investigates the murder of a CEO with ties to the world’s main food supply.”
One of those movies that I can now say we’ve seen. Not particularly fussed either way. 2.5 stars.

9. The Book of Life“Manolo, a young man who is torn between fulfilling the expectations of his family and following his heart, embarks on an adventure that spans three fantastic worlds where he must face his greatest fears.”
This was our Friday night movie 2 weeks ago for the family, and even though I only got to see about half of it in the first screening, the kids watched it again the next day so I got to fill in most of the blanks. I often get a bit nervous about the kids watching movies that I find a bit visually scary/creepy but I know they are not as wussy as me (see #7) and they really loved this story, as did I. It had some lovely “take home” thoughts and feelings, and I would like to watch it uninterrupted at some stage (ha ha ha ha) so we’ll see how we go. 4 stars.

10. Zootopia“In a city of anthropomorphic animals, a rookie bunny cop and a cynical con artist fox must work together to uncover a conspiracy.”
This is a pretty good kids movie.  The sloth scene actually almost killed me! Ha! I am not a patient person, clearly. Hubs enjoyed watching me squirm, I’m sure. A solid performer. 3.5 stars.

10 things on the 10th

You know how there are some things in life that always stay with you and you remember them at the most random, weird times? Here’s a few that I’m sure the other people involved, wouldn’t recall them ever happening, but for some strange reason, have always been at the back of my mind. Bear with me here.

  1. My school nurse telling me that I wasn’t fat. And me not believing her. I was 17 and I went to see the school nurse because I was convinced I was terribly overweight (I wasn’t. Maybe just a bit chubby…). I remember telling her “I’m here to talk about my weight” and she said “do you think you’re too skinny?”. I see what she was trying to do now, and I appreciate her not taking it too seriously. I just wish I could have believed her.
  2. I made a brunch booking for a big group of us at a small cafe (I was about 25) and then we changed the venue the day before and I forgot to cancel the other booking. They rang me half an hour after we hadn’t shown up and I lied and said I had called the day before to cancel it. Then the manager rang me after that to say they had been turning people away because of my booking. I felt so so awful about it. I relive the moment and imagine what I could have done instead.
  3. A family friend saying to me, at the age of 14 “you’re going to be a terrible mum.” Because I kept picking up my cousin whenever she wanted me to (hey Sarah!!) who was 1 at the time. Turns out they were wrong though 🙂
  4. Hearing a doctor say something like “more kids die of choking on chicken bones than of asthma”. I had pretty bad asthma as a kid, and I’m sure the comment was meant to make me feel better, but it just made me paranoid about eating chicken.
  5. When I was 17 I put my hair in 2 little pigtails with cute little scrunchies as I was getting ready for school. And just as I got to the school gate, I took them out because I was worried I wasn’t cool enough to wear my hair in 2 pigtails. Oh how I wish I could tell 17 year old me that I was totally cool enough!
  6. I was giving my cousin a ride on my shoulders (I was probably 18?) and I thought my brother was behind me said that he had him so I leant back and my cousin and I fell over. Now that I have kids, this memory makes me cringe. No one got hurt, but I was so nervous about that kind of thing for a long time.
  7. I was visiting my friend in Sydney and we caught a cab home with one of her colleagues/bosses and I asked her “so are you still looking at jobs in Brisbane? When are you hoping to move back??” And it turns out she hadn’t told anyone at work she was going to leave. She moved back not long after 🙂
  8. Being told when I was pregnant with Chance that even though having a baby isn’t easy, having ONE baby is a piece of cake compared to having 2 or 3 or more. That was a game changer for me and a great way to go in to year 1 of motherhood.
  9. Being left out of a game at a friend’s birthday party because it was a dice game and there were 7 kids. I remember being pushed out of the circle and told I couldn’t play. I would have been 6 and it was in Dimbulah where I spent a lot of my childhood.
  10. Being convinced for a very long time (maybe 8 years?) that I had alzheimers disease because I didn’t have a very good memory. What can I say? Hypochondria ran strongly through my veins. My mum even let me get tested when I was about 17 or so, but I was still convinced for a while after that. Such a weirdo.

So there you go. Nothing earth-shattering, mostly random ramblings, and I’m hoping now that I’ve got it out of my head, maybe I can move on from these things? Time will tell.

10 things I’ve missed about Melbourne

Hubs and I arrived in Melbourne yesterday for a week. Child free. He has exams today and tomorrow morning and then the city is ours to enjoy. So for today’s 10 things in the 10th, I give you Melbourne and all its awesomeness.

1. Cheap food. Particularly cheap sushi. The sushi we bought yesterday was $2.20-$2.50 per roll, and delicious.

2. Good coffee. Everywhere.

3. The public transport. Particularly the trams.

4. The shopping.

5. Good friends to stay with (thanks Jason and Susan) and to visit.

6. Everyone just minds their own business and kind of does their own thing when you’re out and about. I never feel judged down here.

7. It’s easy to walk everywhere when we stay in Carlton.

8. “The sprout and the bean”. This song was used in a “Visit Victoria” song before we moved to Melbourne and it became our Melbourne song. I played it on my phone yesterday as we were sitting in a lane way having a drink and it brought back so much for me.

9. Dinner with family. Our Melbourne rellies have a family dinner in Tuesdays and we went last night for a great catch up, amazing food and some of the best company in town. Love you guys.

10. The feeling I get when I come to Melbourne. This last one is a bit of a lead-in to my next post. And strap yourselves in guys, cos it’s going to be post #1000 on the blog 🙂
