Self portraits, belly shots, and new hair

I decided to get my hair done last week, since I won’t have a lot of free time once Littlefoot joins us in the outside world. I haven’t dyed my hair in almost 18 months, and was in need of a bit of a cut, so I got the works done. And I feel like a million bucks! I found a great hairdresser who uses natural hair dyes with no amonia, and who did exactly what I asked for and didn’t charge an absolute fortune – they are just so hard to find! I’ll certainly be going back to her (eventually). I think it’s hilarious that It’s only taken me 30 years (okay, 15 years of actually trying) to find a hair style that I really like and that I know pretty much exactly what to ask for when I walk into a hair salon. Getting the hairdresser to actually do what you ask for is another thing, so that’s why I was so excited about this one!

I also decided to try my hand at some self-portrait belly shots – this is harder than it looks! I got a couple of okay ones, but would like to practice the whole self-portrait thing a bit more and learn how to frame a bit better. Oh, and a nice mirror would actually help I’m sure. The first 2 are my attempts. The next 2 are the belly shots Hubs took of me just before we went out to dinner with Mum and Dad at Rinaldo’s (delish!!) last week.

From the front

And the side
From up high
And down low (too slow! ha ha ha ha)
We’re really enjoying using our new camera. It’s a sony something-or-other and it’s great for not only pointing and shooting (my kind of photography) but you (read: Hubs) can do lots of other cool things with it as well. I’m sure I’ll be able to explain what those things are some day, but for the time being, I’m just happy to use it in auto mode, much to Hubs’ horror! Hee hee!

Movember

When Hubs started talking about participating in Movember this year, I was a little hesitant, knowing that our baby is due in November, which means his first photos with his first son/daughter would be filled with whiskers. But who am I to get in the way of a good cause!? The hospital where he is based has put a team together, so if you would like to sponsor Hubs or the team, you can go to their site here.

This is a week into Movember and Hubs is going for the handlebars + mutton chops look, or as Hubs likes to call it, “The Trucker”. You likey?

The trick will be to participate in Movember every year, so each year Junior can have photos of his/her crazy Dad with his crazy Mo!

Lady in red

I’m currently writing some posts about our mammoth weekend, but am having photo-accessing-issues (so what’s new!?) so just to keep you entertained, here’s some I prepared earlier. Hubs took these shots of me outside our unit when I was all dolled up for our dinner at Brown Brothers for a conference Hubs attended a few weeks ago.

Where’s the bump?

Oh there it is!

We had a sensational evening with amazing food (truly. AMAZING!) and lovely tastes of a couple of wines and we were at a great table with very interesting people. The conversation was enthralling and not all about medicine! The guest speaker for the night was a gentleman who used to be a doctor down in Antarctica for 9 months of the year, and now recruits said doctors for long (9 months) and short (6 weeks) stints down there. Of course, Hubs couldn’t wait to chat to him afterwards!

Truly a wonderful night to remember. (Did I mention how awesome the food was??)

A review

After Hubs and I attended the Swap Meet in Melbourne a few weeks ago, we went and had coffee and cake at Cafe Cirino in Williamstown. We chose it because, well, it was the first place we came across, and the thing about Melbourne, is that pretty much no matter where you go, you get good coffee. It’s not always good service, but the coffee is always good. Or in this case, fantastic. Hubs ordered an affogato, which is what he always orders these days, and I ordered a large soy cappacino. We also grabbed a piece of almond orange cake to share. This is what came out:

And it was all… so…. goooooood. Including the service! The cake was moist and delicious. The affogato was creamy and beautifully presented. And my soy coffee? Well, let’s just say I gave Meg Ryan in “When Harry Met Sally” a run for her money.

Even as I’m writing this, I’m remembering how good it all was. The weather was lovely, I had my gorgeous Hubsband sitting with me, holding my hand, and the delights we were served just topped it all off. There are so many times in life that could just blend into your day/week/month/year, but it’s nice to cherish those little moments of loveliness, and this was definitely one of those times for me. No frills, nothing fancy, just a whole lot of goodness.

Another Swap Meet

After going to the swap meet in Shepparton a few weeks ago, I wasn’t about to start doing cartwheels when Hubs said there was another one he wanted to go to in Melbourne. “But this one’s a VW only Swap Meet” he says. Like that’s supposed to make it better?

I was a little sceptical but we got up at 7:00am on the Sunday after the game as we wanted to “fight the crowds” and “get a good parking spot”. The swapping and meeting started at 8am and we arrived around 8:30am at Williamstown. As we were “looking for a park” we saw a few VWs and then drove right past the venue – there were parks right outside!! Obviously this meet was a lot more low-key than the last which was absolutely fine by me!

We actually had a really nice time chatting with fellow kombi and VW owners about this and that and Hubs bought himself some carbis!

I’m not sure that he needed all 3, but considering he also wanted to buy a whole “new” engine that I talked him out of, I let it slide. Thankfully there wasn’t the junk at this meet that there was at the last meet, and it was wholly VW-related. Some of the cars were just gorgeous!

And some had the potential (maybe… eventually…) to be so:

And one kombi in particular, around the same model as ours (1977) was fully restored. It was nice to see what our kombi could maybe look like one day…. (but, you know, with our own kids…)

And of course there weren’t just kombis! It was a VW affair after all.

I had some photos of some beetles as well but don’t seem to have them with me right now. But you all know what they look like 🙂 It really was a nice way to spend a Sunday morning and afterwards we went and had a coffee and cake, but that deserves a post all of its own.

Role reversals

When it comes to most things, Hubs and I have a fairly typical boy/girl relationship. I don’t mean to stereotype, but Hubs looks after all the technical gadgets in our possession, he takes out the rubbish, and opens tight jar lids, whereas I do most of the cooking and washing etc. There are a couple of things, however, where we have taken on each other’s roles.

The first of which is watching sport.

I can’t get enough of it!! (“sport sport sport sport sport sport sport sport”) whereas Hubs can take or leave it. There is nothing more exciting to me (well, sometimes!) than sitting at home on a Friday night or Saturday afternoon to watch a game of AFL, Rugby League, Rugby Union, cricket, hockey…. hell I’ll even watch golf!! (well, I would if we had a TV.) I love a good game of footy – a close match that’s battled out into the dying seconds, and as long as “my” team plays well, I don’t even mind if we lose.

Hubs is not like this. He does not have much inclination to sit down and watch a game of footy, and he finds it very stressful when “his” team is involved in a close game. He would much rather watch a game where he’s not particularly going for either team, or one that he already knows the result of. We’re just different like that, and I often exclaim that my love of all things sports is wasted on him! 🙂

The other role-reversal is when it comes to our sleeping habits. Many of my female friends complain about how their partner keeps them awake at night with their snoring, and how their men go to sleep straight away so there’s no chance of them getting to sleep once that chainsaw starts up. I’m sad to say that I’m the snorer in our relationship (though, I prefer to use the term “heavy breather”). I’ve even been known to wake myself up from a little afternoon nanna nap with my own snoring. Hee hee.

But that’s not the only thing that keeps Hubs up at night. I’m a restless sleeper – when I’m not snoring my little heart out, I’m tossing and turning and waking Hubs up a few times a night in the process. I know that Hubs always sleeps better when I’m not in bed with him – like if he’s away for uni – but I can’t sleep very well at all if he’s not there beside me. And unfortunately being pregnant has only made things worse. I’m not sure we’ll ever get a good night sleep again!!

The only saving grace is that Hubs is a fairly deep sleeper so I’m sure I don’t wake him up nearly as much as he’d wake me up if it was the other way around. Aaaaaaah. The things we do put up with for love 🙂

Pop culture in our marriage

Hubs and I have many running jokes that we just don’t get sick of, and I’m sure people think we’re quite strange when we start one of our “runs”. And I’m sad (and happy at the same time) to say that Beached As Bru changed our lives. We can’t get enough of it. And we refer to it almost daily, even if it’s just an “Aw noo” here and there.
Have I lost you? Don’t know what I’m talking about? Well clearly you need to spend some time on youtube 🙂

Here are some other pop culture references that we throw around on a regular basis:
– Beached as bru – “Want a chup bru?” “Can’t chew bru!” “Aw shut.” “I noo.”
Withnail and I – “Ching ching”
Boston Legal – “Denny Crane” and “Lock and load”
Hercules Returns “eh eh eh eh”, “I love classy lines like that.” “Ooooh you could pick the bones outta that one.”
Rowan Atkinson LIVE – too many references to choose from!!
Scrubs – see above
Eddie Izzard – “Cake or Death” “uuuh cake please” “Well we’re OUTTA CAKE”
– Eddie Izzard – Death Star Canteen – “You’ll need a tray” “Do you know who I am?”

I may have lost y’all very early on in this piece, but I’ve been wanting to blog about this for months now, so that in 20 years time, Hubs and I can look back and go “Aw noo!” and remember these silly things that always make us smile.
